Scout creates big U.S. map for St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School

published Oct. 13, 2011

An alumnus of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School in The Woodlands has created a large-scale United States map in the school's back lot as an Eagle Scout project.

Calum McInich, who graduated from St. Anthony's eighth grade in May, is a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 204. He recruited the help of local businesses, including Ace Hardware and Chick-fil-A, to paint the map, which students can walk on and which teachers can use for a variety of outdoor lessons.

"My students enjoyed being able to move around the map while learning about the United States," second-grade teacher Erin Weixel said. "The map will be beneficial across the curriculum."

St. Anthony's Advancement Coordinator, Becki Kinch, said the map will come in handy for many different subjects.

"Teachers throughout the school use the map not only to teach the location of the states, but they pull in math, geography, directions, problem solving, colors, critical thinking skills and more," Kinch said.

In the photos above, Weixel's class visited the map for a few different educational activities, including, for one student, trying to balance on the state of Rhode Island.
