Mixed-use development of Lake Woodlands gets a boost
The Howard Hughes Corporation has announced plans for development at Lake Woodlands that will include office buildings, retail, hotel and residential areas.
Construction on the 66-acre, mixed-use development project will be completed by the Woodlands Development Company. Called Hughes Landing at Lake Woodlands, the development is designed to be a dynamic destination, with up to eight office buildings, a boutique hotel, numerous retail and entertainment venues and multi-family residential housing, according to a press release from the Hughes Corporation.
"Hughes Landing is well situated at the upper east end of Lake Woodlands, just north of the well established East Shore residential community," said Paul Layne, executive vice president of master planned communities for the Howard Hughes Corporation, in the release. "Panoramic lake views and a planned boardwalk and pier will create a cosmopolitan, pedestrian friendly setting, where people will enjoy the opportunity to live, work, shop, dine and be entertained."
The project will begin with construction of the first office building this fall, with a completion goal of the fourth quarter of 2013. The planned eight-story, 195,227-square-foot building is being designed by Gensler of Houston.
"There is clearly a strong demand for office space at The Woodlands, with our newest building, 3 Waterway Square, already 90 percent leased prior to opening next June," Layne said. "We are confident that the Hughes Landing project, with an abundance of activities for office workers, visitors and residents, will be another great success."
That structure is a 232,000-square-foot building in the Waterway Square District of Town Center. Major tenants include Nexeo Solutions, Waste Connections, Energy Alloys, Next Decade and Insperity. Several retail businesses have also expressed interest in space at the building.
The Woodlands is a 28,000-acre community located 27 miles north of downtown Houston, created 38 years ago. More than 102,000 people live in The Woodlands, with nearly 50,000 working in the community.
